“Honoring Our Veterans” Assembly

What a blessing to take time and honor our veterans again. This year’s guest speaker is Salem Academy 1975 alumnus Byrne Bennett. After graduating in 1975, he worked for the FBI for one year in Washington, DC. He returned to Oregon and attended Chemeketa Community College, Willamette University, Portland State University, and Western Oregon University, earning degrees in Criminal Justice Administration, Political Science, and Education. After a short stint as a teacher, he worked at the White House, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the American Arbitration Association. Most of his career he was employed as a United States Postal Inspector and later, a Special Agent with the Office of Inspector General, tasked with investigating federal crimes in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

After retirement, he wrote a book titled, A Greater Destiny, which is the story about his uncle, Medal of Honor recipient Joe Mann. The book was awarded the Feathered Quill award for being the best memoir in 2021. Currently, he is a writer with a newspaper in eastern Washington. He lives on a wheat farm in Reardan, Washington with his wife Denise, who taught at Salem Academy Elementary School for eight years.
